Big police response to Coquitlam domestic dispute

Coquitlam RCMP are searching for a suspect after police were called out Friday morning to a domestic dispute possibly involving an axe.

Close to half a dozen patrol cars descended on the area around Glen Drive and Johnson Street as officers were responding to what they initially thought was a home invasion.

But RCMP Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said the two people involved in the incident were known to each other and there is no danger to the broader public.

"We have a very good idea who our suspect is," he told The Tri-City News last Friday, noting the man was known to police. "We anticipate an arrest in the very near future.
"A warrant is in the process of being submitted," he said. "We don't believe there is a wider risk to the public. We believe this is a targeted domestic situation."

The female victim has told police she does not want the man to be charged but in Canada, police pursue suspects when they believe a crime has occurred, McLaughlin said.

He added that several witnesses are cooperating with the investigation.
