LETTER: Teachers housing a Band-Aid solution

Dear editor:

Re: Sentenced to Commute, Feb. 8 editorial viewpoint.

I think your editorial on subsidized housing rather missed the point. The main issue was the selection of teachers as the sole beneficiaries of the proposed scheme.

Why not nurses, some of whom travel from Squamish and the Fraser Valley? Why not trades workers? Why not all workers who have to commute from outside the area? All these people would complement the community as wished for in the editorials final paragraph.

The two main concerns on the North Shore are affordable housing and traffic. It would be better to address these as specific problems affecting everyone, including residents and commuters, rather than applying a demographically restricted short-term Band-Aid solution.
