A Coquitlam poultry plant at the centre of one of the largest community outbreaks of COVID-19 in the province has now registered 50 cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Between Superior Poultry Processors Ltd. in Coquitlam, and its sister plant, United Poultry Co. Ltd. in Vancouver, there are now 92 people infected with the coronavirus.

Only the Mission Institute, a federal prison of the city where it gets its name, has a higher caseload at 120.

Of the 55 cases announced Tuesday, nearly half (21) stemmed from the Coquitlam poultry plant. The major community outbreaks come the same day the province registered over 2,000 cases of the coronavirus.

Health Minister Adrian Dix said the outbreaks at the poultry plants show the “serious nature of particular outbreaks.”

"Right now, here's something to consider, that protecting employees, protecting your employees on the business side protects your business and protects all British Columbians."
