A Coquitlam resident has won $500,000 after matching all seven numbers and winning a Maxmillions lottery prize.

Kuljeet Singh Dhaliwal, who bought his ticket at the Shopper’s Drug Mart at Cambie and No. 5 Road in Richmond Jan. 3, had just checked his dad’s ticket and was not surprised to discover it was a loser.

“He asked me to help him check his ticket, so I scanned it, but he didn’t win," Dhaliwal said in a BC Lottery Corp. press release. "My dad then reminded me to check my ticket. I pulled it out, scanned it, and couldn’t believe my eyes.”

In Ontario, someone else had picked the same numbers, leading the two winners to split the $1 million prize.

Still, said Dhaliwal, winning half a million dollars “is an incredible way to start the New Year.”

As for what he'll do with his winnings, he said, “We are already thinking of a family trip to the Galapagos Islands."

The announcement of Dhaliwal’s win comes a day after someone in Bramton, Ont., purchased a winning ticket for Canada’s largest-ever single lottery prize, the Lotto Max jackpot, worth $70 million.
