Coquitlam RCMP issue car break-in warning

Neighbourhood in central Coquitlam targeted by thieves, crime analysis suggests
Crime hot spot
Coquitlam RCMP are warning people to lock their car doors and not leave anything in sight, especially insurance papers and other information that can be used to create fraudulent ID.

With the warm weather approaching, Coquitlam RCMP is warning people not to leave their car doors and windows unlocked to avoid easy thefts by opportunistic break-in artists.

In the Mounties' recent crime analysis, police are highlighting the neighbourhood of Schoolhouse Street and west to Hickey Street, and from Foster Avenue in the north to Rochester avenue in the south as crime hot spots.

Among the issues in the area, according to police, are break-in to residences, theft from autos and theft of autos.

In its online prevention guide, RCMP offers the following advice:

“Criminals who break in to vehicles are known as 'opportunistic offenders.' That means that they tend to look for easy targets like vehicles with valuables left in the open or vehicles that have been left unlocked. It also means that if these criminals find a target-rich environment — like a neighbourhood or parking lot with a lot of unlocked vehicles — they will keep coming back. Be a good neighbour. Don’t be the reason criminals target your neighbourhood.”
