Coquitlam's Maillardville neighbourhood could soon be getting a new highrise.

ML Emporio Properties has proposed a 179-unit, 29-storey tower at Blue Mountain Street and Lougheed Highway next to another 21-storey tower proposed across the street. The new building would include 122 market condos, 51 market rentals and six below-market rental units along with ground-level commercial spaces.

According to a staff report, the design of the building evokes Maillardville's heritage as a forestry community.

"The tower's design draws inspiration from Maillardville's economic and cultural heritage with metal panels of varying wood tones layered over a glass facade, evoking the patterns of log storage on the Fraser River," said the report, later adding: "The podium is characterized by white 'heritage-inspired' brick providing a strong, heavy base for the simpler glass tower above."

The project would include 217 residential parking spaces and 36 visitor stalls accessible from the lane proposed for the east side of the property. The building would also have a 11,695-sq. ft. amenity area with a gym, sauna and community room as well as outdoor bocce courts, children's play area and dining area.

Council unanimously supported first reading of the zoning amendment, which will now proceed to a public hearing.
