Next step for Smiling Creek elementary school

With funding approval, School District 43 to go to tender on the Burke Mountain project

Smiling Creek elementary school will go to tender now that the $20.5 million project has been approved.

A $20.5-million school on Burke Coquitlam will go to tender after the School District 43 board of education passed a capital spending bylaw for the project Tuesday.

The elementary school, set to open in September 2018 for 430 children in 19 classrooms, is being paid for with $17.6 million in provincial funding and $2.9 million is district cash.

The city of Coquitlam also contributed $5.15 million to purchase land for the project, with the district kicking in $4.8 million in land costs.

SD43 and the city have a joint use agreement in which the district will own the northern property and will operate the school while the city will own the southern portion, including the sports field.

There will also be an enhanced gym, multipurpose room with a kitchen and exterior washrooms for park users.
