Pacific Coast Terminals (PCT) is hosting a public open house Thursday about its upcoming expansion plans.
Expansion is being conducted at the Port Moody site to allow the local business to handle food-grade canola oil and potash, according to Diana Dilworth, PCT's community relations co-ordinator.
The company has made application to Port Metro Vancouver for the $150-million expansion, which would include addition of tanks to hold the canola oil; upgrading of the existing water-treatment facility; and deepening of the navigation channel in the inlet from 10 m to 13.5 m.
According to Kent Smith, PCT's manager of maintenance and engineering, the dredging work will involve a barge parked in the water for about a month, and the material removed will be relocated to a site that was over-dredged in the 1960s.
"[This work] won't affect the mudflats... and it's going to be nowhere near the shoreline," he said. The last time dredging was done was in 1995.
The Sept. 19 open house runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Old Mill Boathouse, 2715 Esplanade Ave. in Rocky Point Park. There will be a presentation at 7 p.m.
