The city of Port Moody is shutting down all public playgrounds until further notice as part of the latest civic facility closure to halt the spread of COVID-19.

A public notice was posted to the city’s website and social media channels late Thursday afternoon. The closure will not affect parks and public washrooms.

City manager Tim Savoie said warning tape and signage is being placed around the playgrounds.

"We are advising all residents to follow the direction of the Provincial Health Authority and maintain social distancing of one to two metres," he added.

Port Coquitlam instituted a similar ban only hours earlier.

Earlier Friday, a spokesperson for the city of Coquitlam said it was not following suit with its playgrounds at the time but later in the day announced it would indeed be closing city playgrounds "temporarily."
