Port Moody reimagines graduation in 'Grad 2020 Week' proclamation

The city of Port Moody has proclaimed a seven-day celebration under the banner of “Grad 2020 Week.” 

The proclamation, which runs from June 14 to 20, comes as students from across the district have scrambled to reimagine the what their graduation will look like amid COVID-19 restrictions on social distancing. 

Out are the dances, parties and big convocation ceremonies; in is a “special video message” from Port Moody mayor Rob Vagramov, according to a press release from the city.

The city is also supporting grads by encouraging the community to print a congratulatory sign and hang it in the windows of their homes and businesses, and recognize grads with a custom Facebook photo frame which you can add to your profile picture by searching “Port Moody 2020 Grad.”

The dome lights of city hall will light up in the colours of each school as they celebrate their virtual commencement ceremonies, glowing burgundy June 15 for Heritage Woods secondary graduates and blue June 20 for Port Moody secondary students.

Also on June 20, the city is encouraging all the residents of Port Moody to join all of B.C. at 8:20 p.m. in a province-wide Grad 2020 Shout Out.

“Clap, cheer, wave signs, bang pots, and honk horns while grads around the province throw their caps in the air,” wrote the city in the release.
