Como Lake Avenue has been dug up this year by FortisBC to update the natural gas line.

Students heading back Tuesday to schools along or near Coquitlam’s Como Lake Avenue are being asked to schedule more time to get to their first session.

FortisBC, which is updating its natural gas line down the major road, says it’s working with a contractor and city officials to minimize traffic tie-ups once school returns.

At Dr. Charles Best secondary, one eastbound and one westbound lane on Como Lake Avenue — plus all school access points — will be open. The reminder about extra travel times also applies to students at Baker Drive elementary and Hillcrest middle.

“We’d encourage parents know their route before they commute and give themselves a little extra time to get to school during the start of the school year,” said Alex Munro, corporate communications advisor for FortisBC’s major projects. “We’re working to complete construction safely and as quickly as possible, with construction anticipated to be completed later this year.”
