A trio of Tri-City businesses has been nominated for the 2020 Small Business BC Awards, including a caterer, a marketing agency and a company that makes and sells reusable food bags.

Port Coquitlam’s Salt N Sear Catering — a catering company using local ingredients and run by Zambian-born Jean Jacque Kabuya — was nominated in the Best Company category.

In the Best Marketing category, Element IQ of Coquitlam is competing against 10 other nominees as diverse as the Rio Theatre in Vancouver and Summit Tiny Homes in Vernon.

Port Moody start-up Reuse Bags, which produces mesh bags for produce, natural cotton bags for bulk and dried food, and reusable cotton rounds to remove makeup, is among 10 nominees for the Premier’s People’s Choice award. Other B.C. businesses in the group include a drone company from Fort Fraser (near Prince George), as well as a cat café and Brazilian restaurant in Vancouver.

The semi-finalists were selected from more than 600 nominations. Over the next month, each of the nominees will be tasked with putting together an application detailing to the judges why they deserve to win their category.

Winners will be awarded a $1,500 cash prize and a one-year pass to Small Business BC education and experts. They will be announced Feb. 21, 2020 during the Small Business BC Awards Gala held at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
