The family of a Coquitlam man struggling with Stage 4 colon cancer is closing in on its goal of raising $39,000 to aid with the recovery.

A GoFundMe page for Allistair Cockrell, a father of two, was started to help offset some of the costs associated with the disease, was closing in on $35,000 Tuesday afternoon, a big jump from $30,000 last week. So far, more than 400 people have contributed to the cause and the page has been shared 1,900 times.

"Thank you to all who are praying, donating and helping in their own special ways," Cockrell said in a message on the GoFundMe page. "The journey will be long, the journey will be intense and it ain't going to be pretty, but I promise you my gloves are off and I am ready to beat this thing. My fuel right now is my wife, two boys and amazing family and friends from all over the world."

Doctors are attempting to use chemotherapy to help shrink the tumour to a size that would make the 39-year-old eligible for hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), a surgical procedure that could remove the disease.
