Vandals trashed a Coquitlam middle school on the weekend, leaving thousands of dollars of damage in their wake.

Coquitlam RCMP were called to Montgomery middle school at 8:15 on Sunday night where dozens of windows were broken, display cases, computers and even a vending machine was smashed.
Some fire extinguishers were also damaged, Cpl. Mike McLaughlin said.

“It’s going to be thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars,” McLaughlin told The News.

In a statement, School District 43 spokesman Peter Chevrier said that administrators, district facilities staff and custodians “worked tirelessly” to clean up the mess so that school was able to resume on time Monday morning.

McLaughlin could not speculate as to how the vandals entered the school, nor could he say how long they were inside on their vandalism spree. “A lot of damage can happen fairly quickly.”

However, he said investigators were making progress on the case.
