Editorial: Are you running for Terry Fox?

Funds raised over the years for Terry Fox runs have paid for research that is helping more people survive the disease
Terry Fox Runs
There are several Terry Fox runs in the Tri-Cities this Sunday, including one in Port Coquitlam, starting at Hyde Creek rec centre, with a 10 a.m. start. Other runs are in Port Moody, Rocky Point Park, at 10 a.m., and at Blue Mountain Park in Coquitlam, also at 10 a.m. A run held in Anmore will take place at Spirit Park, starting at 11 a.m.

It seems there is no end to the numbers of people dealing with cancer or who have relatives, friends or colleagues who have coped, fought or died from the disease.

Yet alongside this continuing health problem is hope brought on by the many people researching cures, and those who diagnose and fight the disease with an arsenal of equipment and medicine paid for by fundraisers who support much of this work.

Leading this fight against cancer is the family of Terry Fox, Port Coquitlam's hometown hero who lost his own battle with cancer but inspired tens of millions. This weekend, those those who join in the Terry Fox Run — there are four in the Tri-Cities alone — will follow in his footsteps to raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation and cancer research.

Already, much has been accomplished in the 35 years since Terry laced up his Adidas for the first time in Newfoundland. More people are surviving the fight with cancer than was the case when Terry lost his.

That's a cause for celebration, on Sunday, a reason to run.
