Getting stuck in traffic is no longer necessary thanks to new technology. But some fear the use of cellphone signals to show congestion on Lower Mainland roads could be a privacy concern.

TransLink, Transport Canada and B.C.'s Ministry of Transportation recently collaborated on the development of an online map that tracks cellphone signals to calculate and display congestion levels in real time.

The real time driving map is now available on TransLink's website and shows in red traffic moving slowly, mostly around the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge, and traffic flowing freely everywhere else. TransLink says personal data is stripped from the signals but privacy experts worry hackers could still get in and cause trouble.

Does the convenience outweigh the risks? It's a concern that will dog us forever as technology penetrates further into our lives.
