EDITORIAL: Cheer on Tri-City Olympians

More than two years have passed since Canadians donned red mittens and cheered on home-grown athletes in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Has our spirit lagged or are we prepared to wave the flag once more, even though the summer Olympics is so far away and only watchable from another time zone?

After months of politics, gang shootings and horrific slayings, perhaps it's time for a change and Tri-City residents have a lot to cheer about.

Among the thousands of athletes marching in opening ceremonies today (Friday) will be rower Krista Guloien of Port Moody and track star Jasmin Glaesser, wrestler Haislan Garcia, cyclist Tory Nyhaug, gymnast Brittany Rogers, soccer player Brittany Timko and Paralympic runner Dustin Wash, all of Coquitlam.

London may be a long way away, and most of us will have to cheer from a distance, unlike 2010 when we could toast our athletes from the stands. But with all the other things going on in the world, supporting our local Olympians will be a welcome relief.
