EDITORIAL: Elect senators?

Embattled senator Pamela Wallin is reported as saying she and the auditors don't see eye to eye on senate duties and therefore she disagrees with their conclusion that some of her expenses were dubious.

Embattled senator Pamela Wallin is reported as saying she and the auditors don't see eye to eye on senate duties and therefore she disagrees with their conclusion that some of her expenses were dubious. Wallin has already paid back $38,000 in expenses and believes she shouldn't be on the hook for more expenses she incurred as an activist senator working on causes important to Canadians.

Perhaps she's got a solution to the age-old question of what to do with this hoary institution.

Since nobody knows exactly what a senator does, and the job description is left up to unelected senators, it's time for drastic reform or outright elimination of the upper chamber.

Electing senators would at least make the institution more transparent but could take years to achieve. In the meantime, the public wants to see online detailed expenses for every politician at every level of government.
