EDITORIAL: Itemized expenses

I t's time politicians' expense accounts were day-lighted for all to see. That doesn't mean we think taxpayers' money isn't well spent on necessary travel and conferences, it's just one more form of accounting that is long overdue.

It's time politicians' expense accounts were day-lighted for all to see. That doesn't mean we think taxpayers' money isn't well spent on necessary travel and conferences, it's just one more form of accounting that is long overdue.

Standard operating procedure at all levels of government from school board to the senate should be an online listing of where the money goes so that people can make comparisons and ask questions.

For example, is it realistic that school trustees should get about $5,000 a year for expenses while the Coquitlam mayor spends about $16,000 according to recent financial statements and some MLAs, notably NDP MLA for Skeena Robin Austin, spent more than $70,000 in 2012?

Exactly what is the rationale and where does this money go? It's not that we see a scandal brewing, but a more transparent accounting of expenses is simply a reasonable expectation and a check on frivolous spending.
