EDITORIAL: It's cycling season - play it safe

Cycling season is upon us and with the warmer weather comes the possibility of road rash, whether you are a weekend road warrior or a rookie experiencing the joys of two wheels for the first time.

The call of the road or the quiet trail beckon as daylight hours stretch into the evening but more daylight hours don't necessarily make cycling safer. Even the most experienced cyclist must be aware of their surroundings at all times, understand and use road safety signals, and obey traffic laws. Bikers should also wear reflective clothing and be prepared to use defensive driving skills to avoid a terrible collision or fall.

Parents must also ensure their children know road safety rules before letting them out of the driveway.

It would be nice if cyclists had the road to themselves but they must share it. At the same time, drivers must be extra cautious and aware this time of year to avoid becoming a terrible ICBC statistic.
