Ask a Lower Mainland resident who takes care of our garbage, water and sewage, and even air quality, most people draw a blank. Although these services are what makes the region liveable and healthy, most people pay no attention to Metro Vancouver - the government body that looks after those items.
Is that shocking? Sure it is, given that Metro Van will spend about $635 million this year - about $450 per household.
According to recent polls, just 8% of the population knows that Metro Vancouver is responsible for these important services and Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore wants to change that.
Moore chairs the board of directors (mayors and city councillors) who make multi-million-dollar decisions on new facilities, such as the new ultraviolet disinfection project, a $110-million water treatment plant under construction in Coquitlam.
He faces an uphill battle, however, and our best advice is to show how Metro's major, crucial services are tied to something small: people's wallets.
