NDP candidates seem to be popping out of the woodwork to fly the flag in the 2013 provincial election and four are vying to wear orange in one Tri-City riding: Coquitlam-Burke Mountain.
It's hard to believe that BC Liberal stronghold could easily topple into NDP hands - after all, MLA Douglas Horne handily won that seat in 2009 with 57% of the vote. But that appears to be the expectation of some, judging by the large number of candidates seeking the NDP nod, making this nominating battle one to watch.
Are the four contenders - musician Joe Keithley, former council candidate Vincent Wu, KidSport champion Chris Wilson and veteran civic politician Barrie Lynch - calculating correctly their party's chances in that riding or are they deluded by visions of an NDP sweep? The HST may provide the answer. In Coquitlam-Burke Mountain, 55.85% of voters favoured killing it, the highest percentage in the Tri-Cities.
Time will tell if the HST is water under the bridge or a festering wound that the BC Liberals just can't heal.
