Government budgeting is an inexact science at best but this week's announcement that the provincial government is planning a balanced one is great news.
But how much of it is based on reality?
Some critics, including potential front-running NDP leadership candidate Mike Farnworth, say it's smoke and mirrors and will hurt families. The Port Coquitlam MLA says we'll be paying $900 more a year in utility bills and MSP fees.
Others worry the government hasn't set aside funds to negotiate an agreement on teachers' class size and composition following a recent court ruling.
On the other hand, many would say budget discipline is important, especially now, and are congratulating the BC Liberals. The Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce, for example, is cheering the news of a balanced budget and the promise of a small surplus without hiking taxes. It notes, as well, that B.C. is one of only two jurisdictions in Canada with a balanced budget for 2014.
