EDITORIAL: Pennies can still be put to good use

It will be like pennies from heaven for charity groups if penny-pinching Canadians donate their coins to worthwhile organizations, such as the Eagle Ridge Hospital Auxiliary , which will use them to purchase equipment and patient comforts.

It will be like pennies from heaven for charity groups if penny-pinching Canadians donate their coins to worthwhile organizations, such as the Eagle Ridge Hospital Auxiliary, which will use them to purchase equipment and patient comforts.

According to the ERH Auxiliary, now is the time for Tri-City residents to dig those coins out of car ashtrays and couches, and turn them over to a good cause because they will soon be out of circulation.

The Hospital Cent$ program has been around for a few years but is well poised to take advantage of the phase-out of the copper, and other groups might make a few bucks from the costly coins, too.

It's only Canadian taxpayers who've been losing money - about $11 million per year - on producing on the nuisance coin. And that's a pretty penny.
