There will be so many Port Moody councillors at the upcoming Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference in Saskatoon this weekend that they'll have enough of a quorum to do city business.

Instead, the six PoMo politicians along with the Coquitlam mayor, two councillors and a Coquitlam city clerk as well as Port Coquitlam's mayor, two councillors and a PoCo city clerk will be juggling coffees and muffins while listening to speakers on topics ranging from infrastructure planning to the economics of policing.

These junkets don't come cheap and an $850 registration fee is just the start; the total also includes hotel, food and transportation costs. At what's likely to cost $2,000 or more a person, perhaps fewer politicians need attend and those who do can report back.

Politicians defend the expense, saying they're going to be learning something and obviously we have to take them at their word. It's no Disney holiday but in these tough times, even a trip to Saskatoon is a cost that needs to be justified.
