EDITORIAL: Port Coquitlam picks a cow path - now what?

Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam have a lot of work to do to create a drivable route from Burke Mountain to the Lougheed Highway shopping area out of the meandering cow path that PoCo council picked Monday evening.

The chosen route for the Fremont Connector defies logic for those who like their thoroughfares straight and true as it takes some odd angles to connect with Prairie Avenue and Devon Road. The concern is the tie-in at Devon, Lincoln and Fremont at the Coquitlam border, and how traffic will flow without having too much impact on property and the environment.

While it's understandable that PoCo would choose something that had the least impact on its residents (while Coquitlam will want something that works for newcomers to the city), years from now, residents in the area may wonder at the route that will be taken by them and their neighbours, and how it came about.

The political choice has been made. Now it's up to the technicians to make it work.
