EDITORIAL: Towering inferno of opinion in PoCo

Many people are concerned that radio frequencies emitted by cellphones, wireless technology and cellphone towers might cause cancer.

Many people are concerned that radio frequencies emitted by cellphones, wireless technology and cellphone towers might cause cancer. This concern has been with us for many years, with the World Health Organization failing to establish a clear case for lowering the healthy rate of exposure.

Critics say that doesn't mean there is no link between exposure to low radio frequency radiation and cancer - it just means one hasn't been found yet.

Opponents are lining up to stop a cellphone tower from being built in Port Coquitlam's Greenmount Park. While this opposition is well-intentioned, the fact is there are many cell towers throughout the Tri-Cities and, besides towers, the public is exposed to low radio frequency radiation in much modern technology - and banning this cell tower won't change that.

Many other inventions of modern life are also harmful to health - fast-food, for example - but most people weigh the risks and eat it anyway.

Still, it appears Port Coquitlam councillors have no choice but to listen to PoCo citizens and if they don't want such a tower, then it probably won't be built.

What do you think?Should Port Coquitlam council allow a cell phone tower to be built in Greenmount Park? Vote in our online poll (scroll down, it's on the left side).
