The close provincial election vote count, with the BC Liberals having the edge in seats, gives the Green Party an opportunity to work with the longtime governing party in the next legislative session — not the NDP which has a much more adversarial relationship with the Liberals.
Although many NDPers are holding out for a flip of the Coquitlam-Burke Mountain riding back to incumbent Jodie Wickens after absentee ballots are counted, the likelihood of this happening is slim while overturning a nine-vote deficit, as is the case in Courtenay-Comox, is somewhat easier. If the current seat count stands or the BC Liberals gain a seat, the Greens — not the NDP — will be the party the BC Liberals reach out to.
This is an opportunity for the Green party to push for an end to big money in B.C. elections but, if the BC Liberals retain even some semblance of power, expect a cautious status quo government in most other areas.
