If you were wondering, in consideration of a massive and ever-changing deficit, whether heads will roll in School District 43, let us reassure you: They will.
But they will be the wrong heads.
SD43's board of education announced Tuesday evening that the district would cut 142 jobs - teachers, education assistants, custodians, support staff - in order to rein in a deficit that is projected to be $12 million for the 2013/'14 school year.
The heads that probably won't roll are senior staff members who should have seen this debacle coming.
But the buck truly stops at the elected board, though don't think any of these long-serving trustees is about to fall on his or her sword (credit is due board chair Melissa Hyndes for being willing to face the music). As a reminder, Tri-City taxpayers, your school trustees are: Gail Alty, Brian Robinson, Diane Sowden and Gerri Wallis in Coquitlam; John Keryluk and Judy Shirra in Port Coquitlam; Hyndes and Keith Watkins in Port Moody; and Holly Butterfield in Anmore and Belcarra.
