EDITORIAL: Why is Evergreen deal no big deal?

What a difference a few months makes. Ten months ago, in the lead-up to the Port Moody provincial byelection, the first contracts tendered for the Evergreen Line were big news.

What a difference a few months makes. Ten months ago, in the lead-up to the Port Moody provincial byelection, the first contracts tendered for the Evergreen Line were big news.

A special press conference was held in January to inform Tri-City residents that $3 million in pre-construction contracts were being awarded to Surrey and Langley firms.

But last week, when a much bigger angle to the story was revealed, there was little more than a tweet and a press release (and it doesn't appear the province let Lower Mainland mayors in on the news).

Perhaps it is not a shock that SNC-Lavalin was the preferred bidder to design, build and finance the Evergreen Line. After all, the company's work with the Canada Line is well known.

Still, it is surprising the province didn't make a bigger deal of the long-awaited announcement.
