Recent earthquakes in Japan and Ecuador are reminders that people living in quake-prone Ring of Fire — including the Lower Mainland — need to be prepared.

Images of destruction caused by earthquakes strike fear in the hearts of many. But once those images fade, what then?

At least we know School District 43 is taking action. Next Wednesday, the district is holding an emergency release drill that will get schools quake-ready while also reminding families to make sure they have a back-up plan in place. The event is being held in conjunction with Emergency Preparedness Week, May 1 to 7.

Recent earthquakes in Japan and Ecuador are reminders that people living in quake-prone Ring of Fire — including the Lower Mainland — need to be prepared, with communication plans in place, responsible adults to pick up children from school, emergency supply kits, and water and food enough to sustain a family for 72 hours.

People have been warning about B.C.'s big quake for decades but that's no reason to get lulled into complacency. It doesn't hurt to update emergency plans. Being unprepared could truly be a disaster.
