Is Port Moody ready for a wildfire?

The Editor, Letter to Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay and council: The Tri-City News of Nov.

The Editor,

Letter to Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay and council:

The Tri-City News of Nov. 16 contained an advertisement by the city of Coquitlam inviting residents to attend a neighbourhood planning meeting to provide feedback on "strategies to minimize the risk of wildfire for future development" in the Partington Creek neighbourhood of northeast Coquitlam.

The Glenayre and College Park neighbourhoods of Port Moody are adjacent to the thickly wooded, second-growth forest on Burnaby Mountain. Global climate change is giving us drier summers.

Can the residents of these neighbourhoods be assured that the city of Port Moody (and the city of Burnaby) has strategies to minimize the risk of an interface wildfire?

Does the city's emergency response plan consider a wildfire on Burnaby Mountain and outline an action plan to protect our homes and families?

Finally, the city of Port Moody has civic committees on many topics except emergency planning and preparedness. Perhaps council should consider establishing an emergency planning committee (or expanding the terms of reference of an existing committee)?
