Keep booze out of our parks & off our beaches

The Editor,

The B.C. government is considering legalizing drinking in parks and at beaches.

Maybe I'm misinformed but I thought the reason for going to a park or beach was to enjoy nature. There are dozens of places where people can drink so why would we allow drinking in these natural settings?

According to statistics, anywhere from 40% to 70% of drownings involve alcohol consumption. In addition to that, think of the increase in drunk drivers after they leave the park or beach.

Many people would probably not abuse it but all it takes is a few obnoxious drunks to ruin a day at the beach or park for families and others who are there to enjoy the peacefulness of nature.

I'm sure it would also add to policing costs, not to mention injuries and loss of life, both on the roads and in the water, by legalizing booze in these venues.

If people can't enjoy a day at the beach or park without drinking, do you suppose there is an addiction issue involved?

I encourage everyone to write their MLAs and ask them to abandon this ludicrous idea.
