The Editor,

Re. “Coquitlam OKs performance plaza” (The Tri-City News, July 8).

Coquitlam city council has voted in favour of building a performance plaza on the edge of Lafarge Lake and provided feedback on the initial design proposed by city staff.

Was any feedback given by the public mentioned on whether they want a seating capacity of 900 — minimum — so close to the homes that are nearby? That could get very loud and disruptive, as Coun.

Bonita Zarrillo has questioned, depending on the number and types of events.

But wait, Raul Allueva, the general manager of parks, recreation and culture services says the new plaza will be a “flagship outdoor project” that will be a “defining feature of the Town Centre.” I thought that was the Evergreen Line.

Mayor Stewart says council is “over-complicating” the discussion and then says Coquitlam is only one of a handful of cities without a similar outdoor performance space. Is that what this is all about? Keeping up with the Joneses?

Leave the park as it is: quiet.
