LETTER: Drivers, pay attention to lights, walkers

The Editor,

As a driver, I was starting to get frustrated with the number of traffic lights that have sprung up in Port Coquitlam, especially on the north side.

But there is one pedestrian-controlled light on Prairie Avenue at Regina Street that is a blessing for walkers. This crosswalk has been one of the few where you could never get across the street. It is in a school zone but cars fly though the area and I have even had cars so close that they brushed my coat.

Today, I pressed the button and waited while the light changed from green to red, and the walk signal came on. Brilliant, the cars now have to stop, and I walked across.

But I had just reached the other side when a black pickup with a black canopy drove through the red light (you know who you are, I got your licence plate number and there were at least four other witnesses). I guess the driver thought he had waited long enough.

Now I ask myself, what is the point? We might as well get rid of all the lights and crosswalks as they serve little purpose for some drivers.

Drivers, I have said it before and I say it again, slow down, or leave earlier. Give way to others, watch for signs and follow them. It is not hard, just needs a bit more thought.

It is a new year, please try harder to have a great one and maybe there will be fewer accidents and deaths.

S. Mullen, Port Coquitlam
