Re. "Letter: Idle firefighters should rake up their own leaves" (Letters, tricitynews.com, Oct. 24).

In response to Ignac Fodor regarding Coquitlam firefighters raking leaves in their “idle time,” perhaps the letter writer should re-evaluate what he considers “idle time.”

This “idle time” Mr. Fodor speaks of consists of training not only for firefighting but, also, high-angle rescue, hazardous materials calls, swift-water rescue calls, medical emergencies, trench rescue, confined space and SkyTrain rescues.

While there may be some down time in their days/nights, I think firefighters need this time to try to recuperate from the calls they respond to.

I have the utmost respect and am so thankful for all first responders, and no one should comment on their jobs or their time until you’ve walked a mile in their boots.
