LETTER: Port Coquitlam's goal is to keep council meetings civil

The Editor,

Re. "PoCo ponders regs for a respectful Q period" (The Tri-City News, Dec. 10).

I'm confident Port Coquitlam council will adopt common-sense rules to ensure its post-meeting question period remains open and informative without subjecting anyone to rude, aggressive behaviour by those who allow their anger to drive their lives.

One can be passionate about issues without being rude or personal. Those who abuse society's standards of behaviour cannot stand on a pedestal of free speech to justify trampling the rights of others to calm, rational discussion.

No elected official - no citizen, for that matter - should have to tolerate the actions of bullies, who would be better off seeking help for their behaviour and contributing positively to the world around them.
