Letter: Port Moody councillor's proposed survey is 'manipulative'

Letter writer says a survey Port Moody councillor Hunter Madsen is proposing be included in the city's property tax notices is 'exclusionary' and 'manipulative.'

Port Moody Coun. Hunter Madsen has another creative enterprise on the city agenda for Tuesday’s council meeting.

The city is currently starting the public engagement process as they look to update their official community plan (OCP). In fact, there is a great platform on the city website to access all aspects of the process.  Port Moody 2050: updating our Official Community Plan | Engage Port Moody is a great space for residents to learn about the OCP and become engaged.

Madsen wishes to circumvent the proper process by pushing out an amateurish “survey” filled with incendiary and fear-raising images and leading questions, apparently aimed to a desired outcome.

Madsen is suggesting his survey be included with all residential tax notices.

At minimum, this is extremely exclusionary as it does not provide renters in the city an opportunity to provide input on matters that affect their everyday lives and that of their families.

Madsen was first elected by pushing a fear-mongering campaign over the protection of Bert Flinn Park, then re-elected by doubling down on that fear by suggesting that without his slate’s protection, Port Moody would fall victim to “Metrotownification”.

Now he is lining up the next, best, hot-button issue for their next campaign – too-dense, too much traffic, too many high rises, over-crowded amenities.  And infuriatingly, he’s trying to use city staff time/resources to do it.

This latest attempt to circumvent proper city processes and input should be seen for what it is – a poorly-worded and manipulative attempt to influence owner voters in advance of our next municipal election.
