The Editor,
Re. "Donation limits were early topic for committee" (Letters, The Tri-City News, March 25).
I am writing to correct some misinformation.
The special Parlia-mentary Committee on Local Government Election Expenses was specifically tasked to look at local municipal election spending separately from other reforms. The reason? That was one of the recommendations of the joint UBCM-Provincial Task Force on Local Government Elections, which completed its work several years ago. The government has implemented all of its other recommendations, which saw the most complete overhaul of municipal election laws in decades.
The work on this has already begun, with our first committee meetings being held in the fall, and our commitment has always been to have election spending in place for the next municipal election in 2018.
There are times to put aside partisan attacks and this important reform is one of them, which is why I will continue to advocate, to ensure the committee works to meet its mandate of new spending limits for municipal elections.
