Re. "Electoral reformers renew call for change" (The Tri-City News, Oct. 24).
In adding to The Tri-City News' excellent article on the need to reform our electoral system, another fact:
Under our first-past-the-post (FPTP) system, about half of votes cast are wasted, not going to elect anyone.
On crunching the numbers for B.C., I found that 53% of votes cast were ineffective, wasted. In countries, like those in Scandinavia, less than 10% of votes are wasted.
For those who consider elections a sport with winners and losers, FPTP is the best bet.
For those who want a democratic outcome, where the will of the voters is paramount, then proportional representation is the way to go.
