In light of the employment equity clause found in all federal and some private company job postings, I was interested to see how the number of visible minorities is going to be determined in the latest census.
Here is the basic clause: “The Employment Equity Act identifies and defines the designated groups as: women; Aboriginal peoples — people who are Indian, Inuit or Métis; persons with disabilities; and members of visible minorities — people, other than Aboriginal peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour.”
As the postings urge applications from all of the above-mentioned groups, with an obvious exclusion of one particular gender and ethnic group, I would have thought some updating of the demographics is due.
