LETTER: Will new community mailboxes be secure?

Re: "Mail theft hits Plateau family" (The Tri-City News, Feb. 4)

Sometime in the next four years, door-to-door mail delivery will cease in the Tri-Cities. It will be replaced by service to new community mailboxes.

Responding to recent community mail box break-ins, Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung remarked that the thieves look for mail boxes in a dark and secluded area.

If Canada Post has put community mail boxes in such vulnerable locations in the past, then how can we have any confidence that the new installations will be safe?

I contacted Canada Post a year ago to ask about community mail box site selection criteria (such as maximum walking distance of the most remote customer) and amenity features such as lighting, weather-proof shelter and accessible parking. Canada Post was not forthcoming on site selection criteria and indicated that amenities would have to be carried out on someone else's dime.

Are the three cities budgeting for safe, user-friendly community mail boxes?
