Letter: If you don't like Chinese money at UBCM reception, don't attend

The UBCM's plans to review its sponsorship policy — while still going ahead with a reception sponsored by the Chinese Consul-General — did not appease Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West.

The Editor,

Re. "PoCo calls on UBCM to stop sponsorships" (The Tri-City News, July 18).

I agree with Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West that the Union of BC Municipalities should not accept foreign sponsorship at the UBCM convention, especially from China at this time.

But even if it's too late to change it this year, there is a very simple solution: It’s a reception, so if you disagree with the practice, just don’t attend.

That will send a clear message if only Chinese government representatives and a few other dignitaries are present.
