Museum would do much for Coquitlam

Re. "It's time: Coquit-lam needs its own museum" (Opinion, The Tri-City News, Oct. 12).

The column calling for a Coquitlam museum hit the mark. Coquitlam is long overdue for a museum in which to showcase its dynamic history, people and environment.

A museum would preserve our past, provide learning opportunities for students of all ages, draw people to the city and, perhaps most importantly, make local history accessible to our citizens.

It seems that there are many B.C. communities of much smaller size and means that have been able to open and operate museums. Frankly, it is surprising that Coquitlam does not have space for its history. A city as large, diverse, historic, with as much character (not to mention as many characters) as Coquitlam deserves a window on its past and its place in the larger community surrounding it.

I commend the Coquitlam Heritage Society for its hard work and vision. Let's see if our city council has the will, vision and commitment to build a cultural institution that will serve the community for many years to come.

If we can spend a couple million dollars on the Spirit Square, then certainly there must be funding available for a museum.
