Pedestrians be careful

The Editor,

Re. "Cops look into tips from video" (The Tri-City News, Sept. 18).

First, I would like to convey my sympathy to the family and friends who tragically lost their loved one to a hit-and-run driver. Such a cowardly act.

I am a driver and I have noticed that when the light turns green for motorists, nearly every time, if there is a pedestrian about to cross and the crossing sign comes up, the pedestrian just steps off the curb without even looking over their shoulder.

Pedestrians should be aware that there are cars on the road and just because they are in a crosswalk, looking both ways and over their shoulders before stepping off the curb would be a good practice. I know pedestrians are supposed to have the right-of-way but they should be more aware of their surroundings.

We should all be looking out for one another, then the roads would be much safer for motorists and pedestrians alike.
