Re. "Close taxation gap, says mayor" (The Tri-City News, May 4).
Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore wants to discuss the imbalance between residential and business taxes. May I remind the mayor that when discussing these perceived differences, he take into consideration the fact that businesses get to deduct 100% of property taxes on their tax return.
I would also caution Mayor Moore not to buy into what is being lobbied by special interest groups but to look around and see that PoCo continues to attract both new businesses and residential development. Is that not the balance that a city wants?
I believe if PoCo council worked a little harder on balancing city spending and for two or three years we had no tax increases, this would be far more helpful to the businesses and taxpayers of PoCo than trying to rebalance what is perceived by a special interest group as being unfair.
