Should we still give Halloween candy?

I believe Halloween is a little like Christmas - with the spirit of giving in mind. This is especially evident in households that don't have young children any longer. They bother to put up decorations, they bother to purchase candy, they bother to stay home.

But first, the candy issue needs to be addressed. As we start to recognize the growing trends of global obesity, households should start thinking of alternatives to the traditional candy. There is an abundance of non-edible Halloween treats: balloons, stickers, stationary, etc. No one says you can't give those out.

Most part of the evening's excitement for my kids is being able to go about freely knocking on doors. It is all about independence, which is a valuable experience for all kids especially the more reserved, introverted and shy ones.

Halloween provides a safe opportunity for children to build self esteem and confidence without the fear of rejection or embarrassment. When a door opens, we know the results would be positive. It is an opportunity that should not be missed.
