The Editor,
I was extremely disappointed to wake up on July 1 and see that the Canada flag that my sons and I had hung in the front yard had been stolen.
Was it a misguided sense of patriotism that led the culprit to enter our yard, cut the rope holding the flag and then abscond with our national symbol? Or, was it more likely a selfish criminal who does not understand the importance of the Maple Leaf?
It is important in our family to honour our great country and demonstrate respect for the ideals which the Canadian flag represents. How am I, as a parent, to teach my three young boys about pride in one's country and our people, when such base behaviour exists right outside our front door? I find this kind of conduct as revolting as that of the thugs on TV singing "O Canada" while cars burned during the Vancouver riot.
To the thief who stole our flag, shame on you. Shame on you for demonstrating how low and selfish a person can be. Shame on you for making me ashamed of a fellow citizen. And shame on you for disappointing three little boys who love Canada.
