If it's your first year voting in a provincial election — or need a refresher about the voting process — here's a guide to get you through:

WHAT: The general election is Tuesday, May 9

WHEN: Polls are open from 8 a.m to 8 p.m. Or, you can vote in advance on April 29 and 30, and from May 3 to 6. If you are away on those dates, visit a district electoral office to cast your ballot before May 9.

WHO: There are Liberal, NDP and Green party candidates running in the Tri-Cities' four ridings: Coquitlam-Burke Mountain, Coquitlam-Maillardville, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody-Coquitlam. To find out what riding you live in, go online to: maps.gov.bc.ca/ess/hm/ge2017/

HOW: You can vote if you are a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old and have lived in B.C. for the past six months. Online and phone registration is now closed; however, you can still register at a polling station (bring a BC driver's licence or another government-issued identification card with your photo).

WHERE: Voter cards will be mailed out this week. Those cards have the address of the closest polling station to your home. But you don't have to vote there if another station is more convenient.
