Fifty steps away from the majesty of Lafarge Lake, and another 50 steps from the SkyTrain, you’ll find more than 50 world-class events–all without the hassle of big-city commutes or big-ticket prices.
Coquitlam’s Evergreen Cultural Centre is proud to announce its 2024-25 season of events, one that will celebrate a cornucopia of performance offerings for those aged two to 92.
The excitement begins Sept. 14 with a free, season launch event at 4:30 p.m.
“This will be a very casual, community-focused dance party to really showcase everything we do at Evergreen and celebrate both performing and visual arts,” explains Evergreen marketing manager Jessica Fowlis.
For those unfamiliar or new to the area, Evergreen Cultural Centre is the Tri-Cities’ premier live entertainment venue, offering professional visual arts exhibitions and education programs for kids and adults.
It’s also the only venue locally to welcome award-winning, professional-level events to the community: JUNO and Grammy winning musicians, notable B.C. theatre companies and so much more–think Jim Byrnes, Sean McCann and Shane Koyczan among others.
Running September to June 2025, the upcoming season will feature marquee musical acts, full-scale productions, emerging artists and everything in between across a handful of specifically themed series.
Theatre series
This is the core of Evergreen’s performing arts offerings, where eight professional productions will be staged Tuesdays through Saturdays. Three Arts Club shows will be held, along with independent programs, and Tasting Tuesdays events featuring pre-show chats and samples from Tri-Cities breweries.
“We have all kinds of things from thought-provoking dramas to musicals with live bands, including the Arts Club on tour,” Fowlis says.
Music series–sponsored by TD Bank
Evergreen’s music series is highlighted by an eclectic blend of contemporary folk, classical and roots music from established Canadian musicians and international acts: harpist Janelle Nadeau, the Quiring Chamber Players and numerous other independent artists.
Family series
This is where Evergreen’s commitment to inclusivity truly shines, as all shows–from puppetry to musical acts are $12 or pay what you can.
“We’re really proud of our family series because it offers programs specifically made for young audiences and children,” Fowlis says.
Variety series
The variety series represents a home for non-traditional performances, where dance and ballet, spoken word, puppetry and comedy come to life.
The Epidermis Circus, billed as the “weirdest puppet show you’ve ever seen,” Ballet Victoria’s rendition of The Nutcracker and spoken word performances by Shane Koyczan will all be featured.
Musical matinees
Hosted by the renowned Bergmann Piano Duo, each musical matinee begins with a complimentary pre-show reception at 1:30 p.m. complete with free coffee, tea and treats. Beyond the dulcet sounds of the duo, violinist Jasper Wood and harpist Janelle Nadeau will also perform.
Rehearsal hall sessions
Designed specifically to highlight local artists, the rehearsal hall series is diverse, affordable and meant to help connect audiences to more diverse kinds of performance and events, like spooky storytelling and trivia nights, dance troupes and more.
“We believe that visual and performing arts are the foundations of a vibrant community,” Fowlis says. “Our goal is to make the arts accessible for everybody, because there is truly something for everyone.”
